Stimulating Students' Creativity Through Computer- Supported Experiments and Automated Theorem Proving

چکیده

We present an environment for learning and teaching mathematics that aims at inspiring the creative potential of students by enabling the learners to perform various kinds of interactive computer experiments during their learning process. Computer interactions are both of visual and purely formal mathematical nature, where the computer-algebra system Mathematica powers the visualization of mathematical concepts and the tools provided by the mathematical assistant system Theorema, which is also based on Mathematica, are used for the formal counterparts. We present case studies on equivalence relations and polynomial interpolation, in which we demonstrate the entire bandwidth of computersupport that we envision for modern learning environments for mathematics.

Using Computer-Assisted Multiple Representations in Learning Geometry Proofs

Geometry theorem proving involves skills that are difficult to learn. Instead of working with abstract and complicated representations, students might start with concrete, graphical representations. A proof tree is a graphical representation of a formal proof, with each node representing a proposition or given conditions. A computer-assisted learning environment called MR Geo is proposed to hel...

Proof-Checking, Theorem-Proving, and Program Verification

This article consists of three parts: a tutorial introduction to a computer program that proves theorems by induction; a brief description of recent applications of that theorem-prover; and a discussion of several nontechnical aspects of the problem of building automatic theorem-provers. The theorem-prover described has proved theorems such as the uniqueness of prime factorizations, Fermat’s th...

Experiments in Computational Metaphysics: Gödel’s Proof of God’s Existence

“Computer scientists prove the existence of God” --variants of this headline appeared in the international press in autumn 2013. Unfortunately, many media reports had only moderate success in communicating to the wider public what had actually been achieved and what not. This article outlines the main findings of the authors’ joint work in computational metaphysics. More precisely, the article ...
